I was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and spent my childhood in Ohio and Illinois. As a kid, I enjoyed playing sports including soccer, swim team and eventually tennis. I spent most of my free time playing with other kids in our neighborhood, swimming and drawing pictures. When I was 14 years old, my parents and I moved to Cobham, Surrey in the UK where I attended high school. Moving to a new country at that age was difficult but I enjoyed spending time with my family and exploring England as well as other parts of Europe. Living abroad gave us the opportunity to travel to many new countries. After I graduated from the American Community School, we moved back to Aurora, IL. I left for college at Indiana University and received my Bachelor of Arts degree studying Studio Art, Metalsmithing, Graphic Design and Art History.
Rory was born in DeKalb, Illinois, where he spent most of his early life. As a youth, Rory was very athletic and enjoyed playing all kinds of sports. After a while, he began to concentrate on and play only one sport; soccer. Not only did he excel in soccer, but academically Rory was always quite brilliant. Rory graduated as a member of the National Honor Society from Byron High School in Byron, Illinois. He then went on to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he studied Urban and Regional Planning and Spanish. Since graduation, Rory has worked as a Mental Health Professional, as an Electrician, and more recently as a Teacher. Rory has now been teaching for the past eight years, and has also coached youth soccer during that time. Rory has plans to soon return to school in order to complete his Master’s degree in the area of education.
How We Met
Rory & I were introduced by our “good friend” Match.com. After getting to know each other the old fashioned way (via email) we arranged our first date on January 28, 2011 at The Foundry sports bar.
What was going to be a drink or two ended up turning into a 6-hour long date where we closed down the bar at 2am! The next morning we chatted online and immediately scheduled our second date!
Rory and I continued dating and in 2012 we decided to visit Iceland together. Little did I know but a few days before we left on our trip Rory visited my parents to ask for my hand in marriage. Rory wanted to wait for the perfect moment on our trip to propose so he asked me what I thought the most romantic part of our trip would be. I listed all sorts of ideas of what I thought would be romantic; the beautiful waterfalls, swimming in the blue lagoon, horseback riding together…
We finally made our trip and had such a great time. It was our first time traveling internationally together and we had a blast exploring the city and seeing the beautiful variety of landscapes Iceland has to offer. A few days before we were to fly home we took a long drive and then a ferry out to the island of Heimaey off the southwest coast. When we first arrived we took a boat tour around the island. We were surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, clear blue skies and beautiful green cliffs. The boat tour ended in a cave with our tour guide playing the saxophone and I told Rory that this was the most romantic part of our trip. That’s when he decided that he would propose to me that day.
While exploring the island we visited the beautiful green cliffs. After all the other tourists who were wandering around finally left Rory removed my sunglasses and told me he loves me. Then he got down on one knee and proposed.
